Well not really the FoD Mustang but my Mustang. Dceet wanted some pics so here is my pride and joy. The design of the FoD Mustang (I actually did model one Grin) was based on an early idea of how I wanted to restore the car.

Here's a pic of what she looked like when I first bought her.

Details:
Year: 1965
Manufacture: Ford
Model: Mustang
Body Style: Coupe
Engine: A-code, 289ci V8 Windsor
Transmission: C4 automatic/Cruiseomatic
Paint: Prairie Bronze
Interior: Palomino and White

Similar to what she will look like at the end, I’ve got some body mods planned. I’ve got more pics somewhere, I’ll post them later.

Prairie Bronze is actually a pretty rare colour (only one other Mustang in Aus has it to my knowledge) so I decided to keep the factory colours.

The history of the car as I know it:

It appears the previous owner of the car (don't know how many there have been (I'd would guess by the work done on it I was the 3rd or perhaps 4th) was a College Student in California who was drag racing it during the 80's. There was alot of old school performance mods I've found as a couple of nasty surprises on how certain parts were fitted.

For those that don't know Mustangs and other Muscle cars are essentially mass produced American beaters (The same way skylines and 180's ect are mass produced Jap beaters) and when the fuel crisis hit in 70's their value plummeted. During the 80's ect. they were worth next to nothing so a lot of stupid crap was done to them. Holes were cut into metal panels to fit speakers ect. and the correct parts were not available so some things were jerry rigged (worst case I've seen was on 65 Fastback, the previous owner did want to rip out the engine to replace a welsh plug so cut a hole in the floor and then used silastic to seal it up afterwards).  There were a couple of things messed which were stuffed on this car when I started pulling it apart but nothing too bad. The advantage I have is that all the parts are now being reproduced so I can pretty much buy anything I want for it. Even then there is still a lot I love about this car.

When I ripped out the engine to rebuild it I found it was brand new. This car had been sitting in storage for close to twenty years as the engine internals were spotless. The downside was the transmission was 100% F**ked.

So where does that leave the story. We have a College Student with a hotted up Red Mustang with black interior (the image everyone thinks of when they think of Mustang), it has light weight drag wheels, a souped engine, B&M Mega shifter, adjustable shocks, performance exhaust and a dash mounted tacho (a rare option). For some reason this kid left the car in the storage and forgot about it, selling it years down the track.

So why did this happen? This Mustang (I call her Lil’ Red) had been his pride and joy, it had laid down rubber and smoked itself to having a reputation. If we factor in the engine and transmission we have our answer. Maybe he pushed her too hard for too long or maybe she just quit on him, the engine blew itself up. After he paid to have fixed her found other things like the transmission needed help as well. These things cost money, money which he didn’t have so he put the Mustang away, probably thinking he would come back one day and fix those things and then this bad girl would be back out there hell raising. Only he didn’t come back, maybe he forgot her, maybe he just stopped caring, maybe it was just one of those things we all say we will do but never get around to it.
So years go by, she sits in a shed fading away, the odd part like the tacho is scrapped out of her, maybe she changes hands but no one touches her. Then one day she finds herself flying down the highway again to be packed into a shipping container. Three months later she arrives in Sydney, goes through quarantine and is trucked down to Canberra and my backyard.
I think I was just finishing my first year at college at time, walked home one day and there she was sitting in my backyard, down in the front, high in the back and looking mean. Call it what you want but I had to have this car. I’ve only felt the same way about another car in my life, a ’68 GTCS Mustang, but my Dad sold it before I had the chance to buy it. I was not going to lose this one as well, the problem was my father and I weren’t really on speaking terms and it was his car. Fortunately my dad’s business was moving into a new shop and he needed every bit of help to get it setup quickly so I got drafted. I started feeling out whether or not he would sell it to me by making some jokes and first then slight inquiries about the price. Finally one night after a long day we were sitting down watching some car restoration show and I asked, he still thought I was joking so I asked again. Next day I went to the bank and emptied half my account to buy it. That same day we started the engine and he said he’d made a mistake in selling it to me, it was then we started noticing what she was.

It’s taken me a couple of years to build up the funds to get her finished and have had numerous setbacks but she only about 8 hours of work away from being ready for paint and then it’s only final assembly to go.

Wooo Updates, UPDATES!

So what's been happening with my baby... problems to put it simply.

Those 8 man hours would have done it but we ran into more problems with having the wrong part or not having the part at all. But that's almost all over with now and I have set date with the panel shop for paint... of course the quote the guy gave me a couple of years back has now about doubled so all my other projects on hold so I can save the money.

More pics:

Old Pics of car:

The old engine and engine bay

The new hood I’m using. It’s full fibreglass with steel inserts so she’s lighter and the scoop is from a 67 GT350 or Gt500. The old scoop is from a 69-20 Mach 1 and 68 CJ and looks pretty badass, the new hood looks real badass.

So in with the new:

The new engine bay all black and shiny. Yeah, there’s something missing, I know.

The engine out for spray painting.

POWER! 289 Windsor, Offy dual port, Carter AFB and JBA shorties

The new dress up kit, will have a matching oval air cleaner as well.

New Kelsey Hayes breaks and a heavy duty swatbar.

The interior is getting there…

Trunks almost done with tank armour for extra safety in case some idiot rear ends me (need to make sure I’m alive to beat the crap out of them)

Well there she is.

Post more pics up when is painted.

Nice!  I almost got one, but I am happy with my 1960 T-Bird.  I can post pics of that.  I am actually repainting my necrons in the same colors of my car.
