Some of you may remember a long time ago I started a Lementers army. Unfortunettly it didn't get very far, as the idea of that yellow was rather daunting and I couldn't get quite the shame shade of yellow on any model I painted. So with only 3 models painted in over a year, I called it quits.

In an atempt to actually get some paint on models I went back and reworked my old DIY Space Marine scheme into something useable. My aim was to get something fairly easy to paint, but also something which would improve my skills. As I'll be the first to admit, I cannot paint Space Marines.

So without further adu, I give you Mr Test Marine:

He is still a slight WiP and needs tidying up in a few places, but he's the test subject so going to try and get him right before I go too far with the others.

The chequer board pattern is my first real attempt ever at free hand, and it went better on the shoulder pad than the bolter. I'm fairly certain now I'm going to tone down the ink level on the model to match right hand side of the model (left in the picture). Still not sure how I'm going to add any depth to the eyes, or the red shoulder pad.

My aim is to make them look weathered and like they've actually seen some combat.

Any thoughts, comments and suggestions are more than welcome.

Hmm, the metallic paint looks a little patchy in places... it is gold isn't it? (the glare makes it a little hard for my tired eyes to tell)

Regardless, using a base coat of your chosen metallic + a normal metallic will give you a good solid base, shading and more. Shining gold + scorched brown for example.

One thing that is often over looked when painting metallics is that you need to distinguish not only between shade and highlight as usual, but also lustrousness  and dullness. The washes make this a lot easier to do than the ld inks did, and when painting gold you'll find Devlan Mud becomes your new best friend!

The freehand cheques look great for a first attempt Smiley

A little tip I picked up from the boys at 'Eavy Metal today when using inks, try getting a hair dryer to get the inks to recess in the correct place. Also aids drying so a successive layer can be added.

Other than that looks good. Better freehand than I can do!

I'm currently considering begining a Lamenters army and am similarally concerned about the dauntingness of yellow.

Your model looks fine, making sure to remove the mold flashing would improve the piece.

Excellent.

The Knights of Ai'Rion are a welcome addition Forces representing the Imperium of Man in the sector.

Death to the Traitor and the Heretic!

*Edit: I am assuming that the Knights are Loyal.*

Well, I just noticed that you have joined the Forces of Disorder.

I take back all the nice things that I said about the Knights of Ai'Rion. Wink

Considering the knights are currently on a "Mister Test Marine vs the universe" combat setting I think it's safe to assume that No'ki is continuing with his Dark Eldar for this campaign. Not that that is safe, he's a sadistic monster who'll string you up by your ankles and play you like some sort of screaming musical instrument.
